The Past and Present of Human Interactions
with Coastal Environments:
Towards a New Interdisciplinary Graduate Training Program

alaska salt marshThis day-long symposium brings together faculty, researchers, and students from Brown, the University of Rhode Island, and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole to discuss plans for a new integrative graduate education and research traineeship (IGERT) program that investigates human adaptations to and impacts on coastal environments, past and present. Guest keynote speakers from the UC San Diego Scripps Institute of Oceanography and the University of Alaska Fairbanks will discuss their experience with similar NSF IGERT programs at those institutions and offer feedback on the Brown-URI-MBL partnership. This symposium is sponsored by the ECI Working Group in Coastal Paleoenvironments and by the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown.

Date: Saturday, October 8, 2011
Time: 8:30 am - 6:00 pm
Location: Rhode Island Hall Room 108

Guest speakers:

Richard NorrisRichard Norris, University of California San Diego and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation; Co-I on UCSD/SIO GCMES IGERT

My research deals with the diversification of life, "rules" that govern macroevolution, and the evolutionary dynamics of open ocean plankton. I also have an extensive research program on climate and evolution during periods of past warm climates.

Maribeth Murray, Department of Anthropology, College of Liberal Arts, Fairbanks; Co-I on the UAF IGERT: Marine Ecosystem Sustainability in the Arctic and Subarctic

Maribeth MurrayCurrent research is focused on human and natural system dynamics over the long-term in sub-Arctic and Arctic regions.  I am currently working with a range of paleo and historic records to extend baseline data on climate and marine systems including fisheries, and marine species, for the purposes of developing effective ecosystem-based management approaches.  I am also involved in the investigation the relationship between climate, sea ice, productive marine hotspots and human exploitation of marine resources, and the study of the relationships among climate change, marine resource use and contaminants
