The John Nicholas Brown Center for the Study of American Civilization maintains a collection of archives created by members of the Brown family, spanning the period from the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century. This collection complements earlier Brown family papers at the John Carter Brown Library and the Rhode Island Historical Society. Together, these archives comprise one of the most complete archival records of any American family, and can be used to understand issues from colonial-era trading to nineteenth-century manufacturing to twentieth century philanthropy.
The collection at the JNBC contains approximately 700 linear
feet of materials, including personal and business correspondence,
corporate records, and a variety of other archival media such
as maps, architectural drawings, and film relating to members
of the Brown family and their contemporaries. The Brown Family
Papers, especially the twentieth century materials, remain a virtually
untapped resource for students of American social, cultural, and
economic history.
Please note: The archives at the John Nicholas Brown Center
are in the process of being transferred to the John Hay Library
on the Brown University campus. The library expects the archives
to be ready for use by patrons in July. For more information,
please contact Holly Snyder
at the University Library.
