Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When is Commencement Weekend and when are shifts available?
A. Commencement Weekend is Friday, May 27 – Sunday, May 29, 2016, but there are a few shifts available from Saturday, May 16 to Thursday, May 21. However, the greatest need is for the weekend.
Q. What are the minimum and maximum numbers of shifts I can work?
A. Workers can work up to 40 hours/ week during Commencement, with a “week” being defined as any consecutive Sunday through Saturday period. Although there is no minimum of hours that a worker is required to work for, workers are required to be available to work a shift on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Commencement Weekend. Luckily, we have shifts at all times on these days!
Q. Which units hire for Commencement?
A. BuDS mostly hires student workers in Catering, Catering Prep, and the Main Dining Room (Brown Bear Buffet), but there are also some shifts available in the Blue Room and Tents on the Main Green, as well as the Kitchen and Bakeshop in the Sharpe Refectory.
Q. What is my pay rate?
A. If you are a new worker, you will make $9.00 per hour. If you are a current BuDS worker, you will earn your current pay rate.
Q. Will BuDS feed me?
A. Most shifts will include a meal at the discretion of the supervisor.
Q. What if I do not work for BuDS and do not have any experience in food service?
A. No problem! Although we do hire current BuDS workers first, every year we also hire lots of students with no prior experience! We will provide all the training you’ll need before Commencement begins.
Q. How does Commencement housing work?
A. BuDS coordinates housing for all student workers who currently live on campus and submit their application on time. There is a set housing fee for the week for BuDS commencement workers, half the regular rate for students who stay on campus. More information about that can be found at the Res Life website.
Q. Will I be able to watch the Commencement ceremonies?
A. Unfortunately, Dining Services’s busiest day is Sunday as we feed guests before, during, and after the ceremonies. If you have a family member who is graduating, let us know the specifics and we will see if we can accommodate you. This is not a guarantee, so please let us know as soon as possible about your circumstances.
Q. Will I be able to attend Campus Dance?
A. Again, Dining Services feeds guests at numerous catered events across campus during the Campus Dance. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to attend the dance in its entirety; however, even if you do have to work during part of it, it is likely you will be able to attend the latter part.
Q. Can I work with my friends?
A. Yes, if you request to work with a friend or group, we will do our best to schedule you on shifts together!
Q. What happens if I don't show up to a Commencement shift?
A: If you fail to show up for a scheduled shift, you will lose the discounted housing rate and be assessed the full $60 fee. Moreover, your future employment with BuDS will be jeopardized.
Q. Are there uniform requirements?
A. Catering servers must wear a Catering-issued shirt and tie and must provide their own black pants and shoes.
