Accreditation and Quality Care

Brown University Health Services has earned the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval™.

We were reaccredited after an onsite survey in May of 2004. Health Services has been accredited since 1986 and is one of only a few college health services in the country to be accredited by the Joint Commission.

These triennial surveys are unannounced and evaluate our compliance with nationally established Joint Commission standards. We chose to be surveyed by the Joint Commission because we are committed to quality health care and patient safety.

If you have a quality or safety concern, you are encouraged to contact the Assistant Director at Health Services at 1-401-863-7872 or via e-mail at Lynn_Dupont@brown.edu.

You may also contact the Joint Commission's Office of Quality Monitoring to report any concerns or register complaints by calling 1-800-994-6610 or emailing complaint@jointcommission.org.

More information related to Brown Health Services accreditation may be found by searching on "Brown University" in the "Quality Check" section of the Joint Commission website.

Health Services Mission Statement

The mission of Brown Health Services is to provide to its patient population high quality, confidential primary medical care that is continuously improving.

Health Services believes that physical and psychological health allow the student to devote more meaningful effort to the stated goals of education and self discovery. Health Services is also a place where education, self discovery and intellectual growth take place.

Emphasis is placed on:

1) providing on site and campus wide primary medical care and health educational services that meet the majority of the health needs of the students.

2) conducting periodic and continuous evaluation of the quality and accessibility of medical and health educational services and consumer satisfaction.

3) recognizing that the goal of the University is education, Health Services provides services which acknowledge that many of the issues of college students involve developmental concerns and behaviors (e.g. sexuality, eating concerns, peer relationships, risk taking behaviors). As such, we support an active Health Education department and a schedule that allows providers to spend sufficient time with students to address these concerns in the context of their medical care.

4) providing cost effective services to patients and to the University.

5) providing quality medical services to Brown University employees in the form of urgent treatment and referral of on the job injuries and work related illness.

6) providing medical consultation and selected services to address the health care concerns of the entire Brown Community.

History of Andrews House

The building housing University Health Services was built in 1892. It was designed by New York architect Ogden Codman, Jr. as a private residence for Alfred M. Coates and family. (This is the Coates of thread manufacturing fame.)

During World War I, the Coates Mansion served as residence for Rhode Island Governor K. Livingston Beekman.

This fine American Renaissance, classical revival building was purchased by Brown University in 1922. From 1922 to 1938, the house served as the Faculty Club. In 1939, it was dedicated as the Health Services and has served as such to this day.

Dr. Charles Henry Hare (Class of 1898) gave a sizable bequest to the University for the house, and at his request it was named Andrews House for Elisha Benjamin Andrews, Class of 1870 and President of the University from 1889 to 1898.
