Call Ahead!
|
863-3953 |
|
For urgent problems, call ahead for a same day
appointment. For non urgent (followup, chronic problems, prescription
refills) we will often be able to accommodate
you the same day or in the near future.
If you cannot keep your appointment, please
give us a call and let us know so that we can fit in another patient.
We need a 24 hour notice for a physical appointment. For all other
appointments, you can call anytime before the scheduled time. Of
course, we prefer to know as soon as you do. If we do not hear from
you, your Bursar's bill will be charged a $30.00 fee.

| Annual
or Routine Physical Exams |
863-3953 |
|
Call to make an appointment for the following physicals.
- routine gynecological exam
- travel physicals
- sports physicals
- pre-employment physical
For gynecological or physical exams, you will
be scheduled 10 minutes before the provider will actually see you;
this is to allow time for you to complete any forms or read necessary
health information. Due to the demand for appointments and the cost
associated with "no shows", Health Services charges $30.00
to patients who do not keep their appointment or arrive more than
10 minutes late and have not cancelled 24 hours ahead of time. Forms
and confirmations may be sent ahead via e-mail.
Physical Recommendations:
Several professional groups, including the National Academy of Sciences,
the American Medical Association and the U.S. Preventive Services
Task Force, have taken the stance that routine annual physicals
for healthy individuals are unnecessary. Healthy people are better
served by seeing medical providers for specific age and risk related
screening tests, designed to detect medical conditions that can
be treated when discovered early. Some examples of conditions that
are easily detected through periodic testing are high blood pressure,
high cholesterol, and cervical, breast, bowel and testicular cancers.
Based on these current recommendations, Health Services
encourages students to request periodic appointments with a provider
for screening checks, rather that a routine physical. Visit us for
blood pressure checks, cholesterol screening, breast and/or testicular
exams, or bowel/ prostate cancer screening for those 40 and over.
Breast exams and cervical cancer screening (a Pap Smear) are part
of a routine GYN exam which Health Services recommends annually.
If you have forms to be completed, bring them to Health
Services for review. You may need to schedule an appointment for
an exam. Health Services will continue to offer routine physical
exams if a student needs a form completed which requires a physical
for travel, pre-employment, sports, etc.
Follow these general guidelines for the frequency
of screening tests:
| Condition |
Tests |
Recommended Frequency |
| Cervical Cancer |
Pap Smear |
yearly with GYN exam |
| Breast Cancer |
breast self exam |
monthly, all ages |
| |
clinical breast exam |
yearly with GYN exam |
| |
mammogram |
yearly after 40 |
| Bowel Cancer |
Occult Blood Stool Test |
biannually ages 40-5-, then annually |
| |
Sigmoidoscopy/ Colonoscopy |
recommendations vary; ask your provider |
| Prostate Cancer |
digital exam |
annually after 40 |
| |
PSA blood test |
recomendations vary; ask your provider |
| Testicular Cancer |
clinical testicular exam |
yearly until 40; then every 1-2 years |
| |
testicular self exam |
monthly, age 15 and on |
| Cholesterol |
blood test |
every 5 years age, if normal |
| High Blood Pressure |
Blood Pressure Screening |
if normal, every 2 years until age 50, then yearly |
These guidelines are intended for individuals without
symptoms. Specific risk factors or your previous history may lead
your medical provider to request testing and visits at different
intervals.

| Dermatology
Clinic |
|
Your Health Services fee also covers visits to our in-house dermatology
clinic. A consulting physician holds regularly scheduled clinics
for dermatology. You must see a Health Services provider first
to be referred to the dermatology clinic. The Health Services
fee does cover special procedures such as a skin biopsy, however
lab charges associated with skin biopsies are not covered. Your
insurance policy may cover the cost. Due to the high demand for
dermatology appointments and the cost associated with "no shows,"
Health Services charges $30.00 to patients who do not show up for
an appointment and have not cancelled the appointment 24 hours ahead
of time.
|
| Male
and Female Providers |
If you have a preference as to the gender of the person who examines
and treats you, please tell the team assistant when you make an
appointment. We will do our best to accommodate your wishes. You
may wait a little longer to be seen depending on when the provider
becomes available. Toward the end of the semester, the availability
of female providers for gynecology appointments decreases.
If you feel more comfortable having a chaperone
in the room during any part of a physical exam, please tell your
provider. We will be happy to arrange for an additional staff member
to be present in the room. This may not always be possible during
school vacation breaks because of reduced staffing during those
times.
