BUMP is a joint project of the Office of Student Life and the Office of the Chaplains which provides mediation services to members of the Brown University community. BUMP mediators are trained student and staff volunteers who meet with the disputing parties to resolve conflict.

(Pending) is the coordinator of BUMP.

What is Mediation?

BUMP is a program which provides mediation services to members of the Brown University community. Mediation is a voluntary, non-disciplinary, confidential means of resolving conflict. It brings disputants together with a trained mediator in an informal, neutral setting to discuss their dispute and find a lasting solution to it. The mediators do not make a judgement, or decide the details of how a dispute should be settled. They assist the parties in reaching their own solution, not by imposing one on them. BUMP mediators are trained student and staff volunteers who meet with the disputing parties to define and resolve conflict. Student organizations wishing to have members trained in the method of conflict resolution may contact BUMP at BUMP@brown.edu.

Why use mediation?

  • Mediation is voluntary and confidential
  • Mediation does not fix blame
  • Agreements are reached by the parties themselves
  • No costs are involved
  • Mediation may provide an alternative to the University disciplinary system
  • Mediation can lead to a speedier resolution of a dispute

What Types of Disputes Can Be Mediated?

Mediation can be helpful in resolving a variety of conflicts, including residential disputes, interpersonal and inter-organizational conflict. In any difficult situation, mediation may ease tension and allow the parties involved to work together with civility.

How to Contact BUMP

Anyone involved in situation where mediation may be of help can contact BUMP at BUMP@brown.edu. If the parties agree to mediation, a time and place will be set up that is workable for both parties will be arranged by BUMP staff.
