Introduction
For more than 200 students every year, the Third World Transition Program (TWTP) has become the center of history, culture and pluralism for students entering Brown University. It serves as a vehicle to build community, engagement and social networks.

TWTP is a unique program that introduces incoming students to campus resources, support services at Brown, and challenges them to explore systems of oppression that still exist in the United States today. Celebrating 40 years in 2009, TWTP evolves to meet the changing needs of our students while maintaining the values of self-reflection and open dialogue about difficult and complex issues.
The uniqueness of TWTP lies in the commitment to talk about issues of race, gender, class, imperialism, heterosexism and homophobia with the incoming class of first-year students. Looking to build a stronger community based on an understanding of differences, the program calls on participants to reconsider their history and aspects of their identity in order to better understand themselves and the similarities and differences between themselves and their peers.
The program also introduces students to the activism, resilience and legacy of the Third World students of color community at Brown. The discussions, workshops, and activities of TWTP not only welcome students to Brown University and build support networks, but also cultivate a campus culture that seeks to bring about a more equitable and just society.
