Learning with Technology Workshop Series

This workshop series, focuses on innovative ways to enhance learning.  By creating a student-centered learning environment, instructors can use technology to deepen students’ understanding and engagement and facilitate the transmission of ideas.  Effective use of technology can empower students to make meaningful connections with each other and with the course material.   

Cultivating Discussions Online
This workshop explored how to extend the classroom through collaborative online learning communities. We discussed how to develop learning environments that foster students’ engagement and synthesis of knowledge. By examining examples of online communities, participants discovered how to cultivate learning communities to encourage intellectual engagement.

Electronic Media and the New Horizons
Led by Professor Kuriyama (Harvard University), this workshop focused on the surprising pedagogic merits that he has found in such assignments, and their implications, not just for teaching and learning, but also for the future of scholarship. Reading and writing have long been the privileged vehicles for scholarly communication. But technology has dramatically expanded our horizons of expression. Since 2005, Prof. Kuriyama experimented with intensive use of media assignments. Students created short podcasts and video clips, both in response to assigned weekly readings, and as a way to present research projects.  View examples of student projects below.  

Experiencing, Experimenting & Playing
This workshop explored how faculty are using simulations, data and visualizations to provide avenues of deeper engagement for their students.  Participants brainstormed topics in their own disciplines where technology might provide innovative solutions or create new avenues for student engagement.

Extending the Classroom Learning Community with Technology

Teaching Science with MATLAB
At this brown-bag discussion led by Professor Thomas Serre (CLPS), participants learned about how he is integrating MATLAB into courses containing students with diverse backgrounds in cognitive science, linguistics, neuroscience, psychology and computer science. He discussed how he introduces MATLAB through classroom demos, live experiments and homework assignments.
