Run and instruct Astronomy Labs
Job Description TA's will be responsible for teaching three hours per week (either F hr 1-1:50 pm or G hr 2-2:50 pm) in GRMN0110 (Intensive First year German). Will work closely as a team with instructor Michael Powers and must be available for a workshop on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 from 9:30 am - 12 pm (the day before classes begin).
Approximately 6 hours per week Sun -Thurs between 6 PM and 12 PM. Monitor the instructional computer facility (BH191); assist students in the use of the facility; answer questions regarding logging on, running programs and printing to PAWPrints; assist students, subject to Academic Code, with computer related course assignments; report, monitor and maintain the printer toner and paper levels; refill staplers, empty hole punches, report any problems to the Engineering IT staff; ensure projectors are powered off; keep the lab clean and neat (remove unauthorized posters on doors and other locations, wipe down desks as necessary); ensure lab rules are followed.
To further assist students, the Dean of the College Office will be offering limited academic support in the form of group and one-on-one tutoring. Tutors will be responsible for assisting students in identifying and accomplishing learning goals for a specific course. We need to hire undergraduates in physics who will work as facilitators for the group workshop activities that are part of Physics 30. The Physics 30 students (up to 24 in each section) work together in groups of 3-4, discussing and solving physics problems related to the Physics 30 course material. Each group sits around a small table and interacts closely amongst themselves. They are also guided by a graduate student teaching assistant, who, however, is not able to work with more than one table at a time. To maintain the good momentum and focus on physics that develops as these groups work, we need an additional facilitator to be present, to help answer questions and provide hints and direction.
The Brown Center for Students of Color Photographer is primarily responsible for shooting and developing a visual record of the events of the student of color community at Brown. During each history month or special week, this Staffer is expected to work closely with the Programmers to develop a prioritized shooting schedule that will offer a representative and insightful record of events. This Staffer is expected to use their own equipment, with all expenses incurred met by the BCSC. The BCSC Photographer is expected to act as an archivist of his/her materials. All work is under the supervision of the BCSC Director/Dean, Assistant Director and/or Program Associate.

Need some pretty basic computer help Hi. I’m a professional (government policy employee) who lives in the Wayland Square area. I’m not exactly computer illiterate, but frustrate easily and would love to hire someone who can provide me with some 1-one-1 assistance with some “to do” stuff on my computer/tech lists, including any or all of the following: o Transfer files (photos, videos, word docs) from a few lap-tops and desk-top onto external hard-drive (and “cloud”); o Organize music (including transferring itunes music between computers); o Organize and store photos and videos; o Setting up a google calendar; o Basic how-to of OneNote; o Basic computer clean-up and checking for virus protection (I think I have it?); o IPad: store data on “cloud” & get face-time working; o How to “stream” from amazon prime; o How to use outlook email with other email accounts; and o Instagram basics. If you think you can help with any or all or these, please let me know. I’m very flexible on hours—an hour or two here or there is fine, or a 4-5 hour chunk of time works too. Daytime (weekdays and weekends) are best, but evenings are possible too.
Research Assistant – Sheridan center and Serre lab – Improving student learning outcomes using machine vision and crowdsourcing
This project is a collaboration between the Sheridan center and the Serre lab (CLPS). Our goal is to develop an innovative approach for extending current learning analytics strategies in STEM education by focusing on machine vision. We will mine visual perception data to develop computational models for features of scientific visualizations that influence learner perception of relevant information. These models will enable automated analysis and optimization of visualizations to improve instructional efficacy. This approach has broad applications for the creation and use of visual material for STEM learning across disciplines and environments, including online learning environments. We seek motivated students to apply for a semester UTRA next spring in order to help: (1) Improve existing models of visual attention to predict salient areas in scientific illustrations; (2) Build software that can automate the process of measuring saliency and iteratively correcting visualizations based on basic saliency principles; (3) Make all software available through a web interface. Prerequisites: The ideal student (advanced undergrad) will have strong programming skills (Matlab, Python and/or C++). We expect experience in any or several of the following areas: web design/programming, computer vision and/or machine learning. This project involves several research collaborators so ability to work in team and a passion for design and usability is a plus. Who are we? Biostat Dept will be offering, in spring 2015, a new course "Stat Methods for Big Data", with emphases on statistical machine learning, convex optimization, and modern statistical computing. This course is open to both graduate and advanced undergrad students, with minimal prerequisites in statistics and computing. This course will need a teaching assistant for transcribing the lecture and annotating the computer programs. The TA will not be involved in grading, and is expected to be enrolled in this course.
