About Public Art

Brown University is distinguished by the character of its campus. Its landscape, architecture, and public artworks form an environment that represents the culture of the University. The University’s public art represents an integral part of its campus environment.
The creation of a distinguished collection of contemporary artworks is a primary goal of the Public Art Committee. We accomplish this through Brown’s percent-for-art program and important gifts and loans.
The loan program was established in 2001 with funding from Brown’s 18th President Ruth J. Simmons and continues through the generosity of donors and alumni. It allows the Committee to bring significant works to campus on a temporary basis.
