TED - Dan Pallotta - The Way We Think About Charity Is Dead Wrong (video)
Activist and fundraiser Dan Pallotta calls out the double standard that drives our broken relationship to charities. Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend -- not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses).

Winning Gifts: Make Your Donors Feel Like Winners (book)
While asking for gifts is part of the staff and volunteers' job, shouldn't you do everything possible to make sure your donor also comes out feeling like a winner? In Winning Gifts: Make Your Donors Feel Like Winners, longtime fundraiser Tom Wilson uses a win-win approach to help both recipients and benefactors feel great about their gifts.

The Millennial Impact - 2013 Research Report (report)
The top takeaway: Millennials first support causes they are passionate about (rather than institutions), so it's up to organizations to inspire them and show them that their support can make a tangible difference on the wider issue. The question for nonprofits becomes then: How can we fully invest in this generation, immerse them in the cause, and maximize the impact of their interest, time, and giving?

Cygnus Donor Survey - Where Philanthropy Is Headed in 2012 (report)
Charts the recent giving experiences and future philanthropic intentions of thousands of active donors. Each edition of the survey also includes an investigation of select issues important to professional fundraisers and/or donors.

New York Times - With Giving Season in Full Force, Seeking to Understand Donors (article)
A new report by U.S. Trust, which revisited questions asked two decades ago, challenged some of the accepted wisdom about how people give money — or at least how most of us think they give their money away.

You can replicate what he did. This post includes all of their email templates, spreadsheets, open-source code to build landing pages, and even a custom dashboard Soma's co-founder/hacker Zach Allia built to monitor their Kickstarter data, social media, and press.
