English Language Learners

Rachel Toncelli, the Director of English Language Learning, offers workshops and individual appointments for students whose first language is not English. One-on-one writing appointments are also offered by graduate student writing associates who have special training in working with English language learners. 

A schedule of upcoming workshops is below. All group tutorials and workshops are held in 203 J. Walter Wilson.

This four week intensive workshop focuses on the cultural expectations and linguistic approaches to effective academic writing in the United States.  Topics discussed will include organization, thesis statements, paragraph purpose, sentence variety, and effective transitions.  Special attention will also be paid to proofreading and editing skills.  Class meets on Friday, September 12, 19, and 26 and Friday, October 3.  Sign up only if you can commit to attending all four sessions.  Contact ellwriting@Brown.edu with questions.
