The Platonism of Shakespeare's Sonnets

COLT 1430Z S01 [CRN: 24634]

It is well-known that Shakespeare's Sonnets exhibit a variety of Platonic concerns, including the erotic desire for the beautiful, the problem of being and seeming, and the relationship between madness and poetry. This course will attempt an explicit engagement with those Platonic themes by reading the Sonnets together with Plato's dialogues, particularly the Symposium and Phaedrus. Enrollment limited to 20.
