Introduction to Classical Chinese

This course provides the basics of Classical Chinese grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and word usage through the reading, analysis and translation of passages from several of the major works from Eastern Zhou to the Former Han (770 BCE to 9 CE). We will discuss these texts with reference to the history, culture, literature, and major debates of this period. The course will be conducted primarily in English, with some reference to modern Chinese vocabulary, grammar, and idioms. Prerequisite: CHIN 0500, JAPN 0700 or permission of the instructor.
