Comprehensive Utilization of Oil Shale in China and Energy Science and Technology of SJTU

Seminar Friday, May 3, 2013 10:00am Barus & Holley, Room 190 Prof. Xiumin Jiang, Director of Institute of Thermal Energy Engineering Director of R&D Centre of National Demonstration Base for Comprehensive Utilization of Oil Shale Resource Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China Comprehensive Utilization of Oil Shale in China and Energy Science and Technology of SJTU Oil shale, one of the most important potential crude oil substitute resources, is widespread in the world. China has 720 billion tons of oil shale, which can produce 47.6 billion tons of shale oil, accounting for about 1/10 of the worldwide shale oil. For utilizing oil shale efficiently and in an environmentally friendly manner, we recommended a new comprehensive utilization technology of oil shale for shale oil production, electricity generation by burning semicoke, and ash recycling utilization. Supported by China's government, we have been doing a great deal of research of Chinese oil shales and this technology, such as macro-molecule structural model of kerogen, oil shale retorting, semicoke CFB combustion, and ash recycling utilization. An industrial comprehensive utilization project of oil shale is being constructed to process 4.5 million tons of oil shale annually. Host: Eric Suuberg, Email: Eric_Suuberg@brown.edu Biography: Professor Xiumin Jiang began his studies of oil shale and the circulating fluidized bed combustion technology in 1982, and supervised a team to develop the first 65t/h industrial circulating fluidized bed boiler of oil shale, put into operation successfully in 1996. From 2000 up to now, his more attentions have been concentrated on the comprehensive utilization technology of oil shale, aiming at highly efficient utilization of oil shale resource. Based on the research of his team, an industrial comprehensive utilization project of oil shale is being constructed in China's Huadian to process 4.5 million tons of oil shale annually. He has also developed another two combustion technologies of super-fine pulverized coal and coal water slurry. He is currently serving as Director of Institute of Thermal Energy Engineering in School of Mechanical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, as Director of the National Engineering Laboratory for Reducing Emissions from Coal Combustion (Shanghai), and as Director of Research & Development Centre of National Demonstration Base for Comprehensive Utilization of Oil Shale Resource. He has published more 200 articles and hold over 20 patents.
