Minding the Gap: Research and Publishing in Translational Medicine Megan Frisk, Ph.D. Associate Editor, Science Translational Medicine The translational research path is a continuum, with steps ranging from basic biomedical research to clinical trials to commercialization. This path is not as smooth or as straight as often envisioned--it's really more of a network of research that works toward a common goal of improving patient health. Sometimes, translation also works in the reverse, where clinical problems feed back into preclinical or basic research.

Just three years ago the prospect of finding temperate, rocky worlds around other stars was still the subject of science fiction: none had been found and reasonable estimates put us years or decades away from such a momentous discovery. All of that has changed very recently on the heels of the extraordinarily successful NASA Kepler mission. By searching for the tiny diminutions of starlight indicative of an eclipsing planet, Kepler has produced thousands of new planet candidates orbiting distant stars.
