Joint Materials/Solid Mechanics Seminar Series: “Elucidating the Mechanics of Clathrin-Mediated Endocytosis”

Monday, September 15, 2014 4:00pm - 5:00pm

Clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) is a key metabolic pathway that plays a central role in the delivery of nutrients and drug carriers into cells. In this work, we model the interactions of lipid membranes with different types of protein scaffolds and active forces to provide mechanistic insights into CME, especially, in the high-tension regime. To this end, we develop and employ an extended theoretical framework of lipid membranes that entertains spatial heterogeneity and local anisotropy that could arise from membrane-protein interactions.

We’re building a powerful discovery tool. Our platform connects millions of people to billions of objects. Indexing user-driven data at the object-level creates immense engineering challenges. Plus, the ambiguity and granularity of image-based data complicates things even further. The complexity of our systems is unparalleled. We've built some awesome technologies to-date, like computer vision aesthetic analysis tools that touch all images and systems that allow over 30 billion pins to be instantaneously recalled at any time by individual users.
