Folklore, Social Movement Inspire Play by MFA Graduate

February 27, 2013

Jackie Sibblies Drury

Playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury MFA '10 tells the New York Times that Providence's reputation as a haunted city inspired her idea for a horror story, which was also influenced by the Occupy Wall Street movement. Social Creatures, which Trinity Rep commissioned and debuted last month, is set in the aftermath of an international pandemic, with survivors trying to avoid contracting an illness that has turned others into zombies.

Her play, which runs closes after this weekend, is a collaborative effort involving the writer, director, and actors. The show includes Brown/Trinity MFA graduates Darien Battle, Rebecca Gibel, and Charlie Thurston.

Drury is the inaugural recipient of the Jerome New York Fellowship at The LARK for 2012-2014.
