What are your elective plans this year?
This year I spent the month of August at Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, studying Hyperbaric and Diving medicine I was able help treat scuba divers who had suffered accidents while diving. In one incidence a 20-year- old male arrived with severe cognitive deficits and left sided weakness after suffering a cerebral air gas embolism after a rapid ascent after running out of air. It was amazing to see how hyperbaric therapy could take a young person with stroke like symptoms and return them to baseline fairly rapidly. During this time I also became a certified scuba diver.
In April this year, I plan on helping to run the Wilderness Medicine Elective for medical students. The elective is two weeks. The first week involves lectures on wilderness medicine, simulations, and skill sessions in Rhode Island, while the second week we continue this but head up to the White Mountains. It is a great opportunity and a lot of fun that combines my interests of being outside, wilderness and emergency medicine, and teaching.

What are your elective plans this year?
In August, I designed a 2-week elective in the Clinical Informatics department. I'm interested in health information technology (IT) from a policy perspective, so it was important for me to learn about implementation of IT systems on the ground. For my second elective as part of my ACEP-EMRA health policy mini-fellowship, I will spend March 2012 in Washington, DC participating in public policy events with ACEP staff members. This will likely include attending congressional committee hearings, meeting with elected representatives and their staff, and participating in discussions with policy analysts at agencies such as CMS, AHRQ, and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). During this time I hope to learn about the implementation of Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) and develop materials for ACEP to promote federal support for health IT expansion among emergency departments nationwide.

What are your elective plans this year?
I plan to go to Nicaragua and further develop a relationship between our emergency department and the relatively new (10yrs) emergency medicine residencies at the two large public hospitals in Managua. One hospital is mostly medical and contains the only cath lab in the country for the public sector, while the other is considered the trauma hospital and holds the CT Scanner. The idea is to establish a long-term relationship focusing on health-care capacity building through resident education. In addition to clinical work, I'll take Spanish Classes at Viva Spanish School and live with a host family. For my other elective, I plan to go to Cuba and study a health care system that is radically different from our own.
