Clerkship in Obstetrics/Gynecology

The Ob/Gyn Clerkship is a six week clinical rotation during which the student is assigned to Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, one of the largest women's hospitals in the country with over 9,500 births and approximately 10,000 gynecologic surgeries performed annually. During this clerkship the student will rotate through the Gynecology Service for two weeks, the Obstetrics Service for two weeks, experience Night Float for one week, and have a one week outpatient experience which covers both general Ob/Gyn as well as subspecialties.

It is hoped that the student comes away from this clerkship with an understanding and appreciation of the role of the obstetrician/gynecologist as a primary health care provider for women of all ages; the importance of the gynecologic history and physical examination in the overall assessment of the health of women; and the major significance of competent obstetrical and gynecologic care in public health and preventive medicine.

Educational Goals

  1. Understand the approach to the female patient, including ethical issues as well as violence against women;
  2. Understand the key components of normal and abnormal obstetrics, as well as obstetrical procedures;
  3. Understand general gynecology and breast health, as well as reproductive endocrinology, infertility and gynecological neoplasias.

The textbook used during this clerkship is: Obstetrics and Gynecology. 5th Edition. Beckmann CRB, Ling FW, Smith RP, Barzansky BM, Herbert WNP, Laube DW. 2006.

The Case Presentation is a required 30 minute talk that the student will give during the course of the six weeks. It will be based on a clinical case for a topic that is assigned. In addition, there is an ethics requirement during this clerkship, with a required paper associated.
