Exit Counseling
Loan exit counseling is required of all students who have received federal and/or institutional student loans. When a student graduates, drops below half-time status, or withdraws from school, they will be asked to complete loan counseling online.
The Brown Loan Office will forward information to medical students on how to complete these requirements online. Additionally, the Loan Office in conjunction with the Medical School OFA, host a financial literacy session each spring to help graduating students strategize a plan for loan repayment and personal debt.
The goals of this meeting are to:
- Provide borrowers with a summary of repayment plans;
- Review repayment options and responsibilities, including grace, deferment and forbearance provisions, loan consolidation and consequences of delinquency and default;
- Discuss basic debt management strategies, including guidelines for organizing loan paperwork.
These sessions will not satisfy exit counseling requirements that must be completed online, but are strongly recommended to receive a better understanding of repayment options. The OFA, along with the Brown Loan Office, also welcome students to make appointments to meet one-on-one for more specific concerns.
*Medical students planning to leave campus or the area prior to graduation must be sure to schedule time to complete the on-line exit counseling requirements. For more information on this, please contact the Brown Loan Office.*
