Home Sweet Home
During the summer of 2011, the Alpert Medical School community moved into its new home at 222 Richmond Street in Providence. The new space radically enhances the way members of this community teach, learn, work, and connect with each other and the surrounding community.
The building is located in Providence's burgeoning "Knowledge District" - formerly the jewelry capital of the US, known as the Jewelry District. Alpert Medical School is the latest tenant in a growing enclave of research buildings, biotech and Internet companies, and higher education. As you can see on this map, it's just across the river from Brown University's main campus and blocks away from the Medical School's major teaching hospitals.
Building Community
The new building will allow Alpert Medical School to strengthen its deep sense of community through the new Academy system, which groups students from all four years into learning communities. Beginning in their first year, students are assigned to one of three academies and will remain with that academy and its faculty mentors throughout medical school. Each academy’s space has a kitchen, lounge, locker area, and meeting rooms, forming a “home away from home”—a place for students to relax, socialize, and study throughout your four years at Alpert Medical School.
Physician Practice
A cutting-edge Clinical Skills Simulation Center features realistic physician exam rooms, where students interact with
standardized patients (actors trained to portray patients). Interactions can be video recorded and reviewed in real time, so students can analyze the exchanges with their instructors and receive feedback on their skills.
Creature Comforts
In addition to the academies and Clinical Skills Center, the new building has a 10,000-square-foot anatomy suite, case study rooms, a café, expanded lecture halls, meeting rooms, a library with study rooms and a computer lab, lounges and common areas, and a rooftop terrace with seating and greenery. There is even dedicated space for a fitness center and meditation room, which will be completed in the next phase of development.
