Strategies for working with medical students in out-patient clinical settings

DESCRIPTION:  

Teaching Opportunities for Primary Care Providers will introduce participants to Alpert Medical School's clinical curriculum and describe opportunities for local primary care providers to teach the school's students in the clinical setting, including a discussion of benefits for both teachers and students.

Working with Medical Students in the Outpatient Primary Care Clinical Setting offers detailed desriptions of the teaching role in current clinical clerkships for community providers in each primary care specialty and discusses strategies for maximizing efficiency as a clinical teacher.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:  At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

1. Describe specific opportunities for local primary care providers to teach Alpert Medical School students in the clinical setting.

2. Delineate the tangible and intangible benefits of teaching medical students.

3. Provide a detailed description of the teaching role in the current clinical clerkships for community providers in each primary care specialty.

4. Understand the qualities and skills of an effective and efficient outpatient preceptor.

5. Apply information and skills learned in this session to future interactions with medical students placed in their clinical practices.
