Pathobiology is an interdisciplinary field devoted to basic research into the mechanisms of disease.  The techniques of molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry are used to characterize structural, functional, and chemical abnormalities occurring at the intercelluar and subcellular levels.  Knowledge acquired at this basic level is then systematically integrated to provide a fundamental understanding of an underlying disease process.

 

The Pathobiology Graduate Program at Brown University is highly integrative and cross-disciplinary.  It has achieved this status by bringing together faculty members from various campus-based departments, its affiliated hospital-based departments and scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL).  Members of the Program are involved in a wide range of research activities relevant to understanding the initiation, progression and resolution of human disease, both heritable and non-heritable.
