Background

Megan Klein Hattori received her PhD in Sociology from the University of Maryland in 2008 and was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the PSTC from 2009-2011 and a Visiting Assistant Professor in Sociology and Population Studies in Academic Year 2011-2012. Klein Hattori continues to collaborate with David Lindstrom and works on his research project in Ethiopia on adolescent reproductive health.

She is interested in how young adults navigate uncertainty and risk as they transition from adolescence to adulthood. Her research in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, focuses on the complex, yet critical role of trust and commitment in condom use and fidelity during the ongoing AIDS epidemic. Her research in southwest Ethiopia focuses on the transition to marriage in an environment where the relationships between marriage, kin, and legal institutions are changing. She is currently revising a proposal with Ulla Larsen and Marida Hollos to investigate how young women and men in Moshi, Tanzania cope with infertility in a context where becoming a parent is critical to the transition to adulthood.
