July 23, 2013

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] - This year's Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI), once again brought together numerous PSTC faculty associates, alumni, and longtime collaborators for two weeks of intensive professional development for participants from the Global South.

PSTC associates were particularly well-represented in The Population and Development Institute, convened by associate Daniel J. Smith and former PSTC postdoc Bianca Dahl (University of Toronto), with assistance from postdoc Ellen Block. This institute featured lectures by PSTC associates Andrew Foster, Michael White, Stephen McGarvey, Melani Cammett, Glenn Loury, David Weil, and Rachel Franklin, along with alumna Silvia Giorguli (El Colegio de Mexico) and longtime PSTC collaborators Alex Ezeh (African Population and Health Research Center, Nairobi, Kenya) and Randall Kuhn (University of Denver). Associate Abigail Harrison was a co-convener of the Global Health BIARI, for which associate Omar Galarraga and staff member Kelley Smith served as reviewers of group proposals. Nega Assefa, a collaborator of David Lindstrom’s from Haramaya University (Ethiopia), was a participant in this BIARI; current PhD trainee Ayalu Reda, formerly of Haramaya University, is an alumnus of this BIARI. Trainees Yunus Rafiq, Dana Smiles, and Colin Johnson were also coordinators.
