Research findings of Dominique Michaud, ScD, Professor of Epidemiology at Brown University, were featured on the National Cancer Institute website. She, along with co-investigator Jacques Izard, Ph.D., reported that periodontal disease may increase risk of pancreatic cancer. Findings indicated that people with high levels of antibodies for an oral bacterium responsible for the severity of gum disease (Porphyromonas gingivalis), were at a doubled risk of developing the disease. Those with high antibody levels for other oral bacteria were at reduced risk when compared to those with low antibody levels to the same bacteria.
