Countering the effects of lifelong poor health habits — smoking, poor diet, little exercise — is important and may take time. What if interventions during the nine-month window of pregnancy could improve a newborn's prospects for good health? In her dissertation, Golareh Agha, who receives her Ph.D. in public health this month, studies lifetime risks and shows that such interventions could mitigate risks for the child from birth.
