Health Careers Peer Advisors 2013-2014: Call for Applications

April 22, 2014

The Health Careers Peer Advisors (HCPAs) are experienced health careers students who are available to provide advice to their fellow students about the intricacies of pre-health and medicine studies at Brown. The HCPAs hold weekly peer advising hours in Sci-Li 303 and take a leading role in organizing two events per semester to address the needs of First-Year and Sophomore students interested in the health professions. The HCPAs' biographies and contact information are available on the Health Careers Advising website, and all students are welcome to contact them throughout the year for advice on a variety of issues. In addition, the HCPAs hold several special office hours during registration periods and provide information on a variety of pertinent topics through the Health Careers listserv and social media. Working with the Assistant Dean for Health Careers Advising, the HCPAs receive training on the academic and experiential requirements for admission to medical school and other health profession training programs. The HCPAs also represent the Office of the Dean of the College at various events and programs, including Orientation, A Day on College Hill, the Health Careers Advising Bonanza and the Concentration Fair.

HCPAs are expected to commit up to five hours per week throughout the academic year (additional hours may be required during certain busy periods). The HCPAs are required to attend two training sessions during orientation week at the beginning of the fall semester and bi-weekly coordination meetings during the academic year. In addition, the HCPAs coordinate two events per semester for first and second year students in collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Health Careers Advising.

Applications are accepted only from rising Juniors or Seniors who have completed more than half of the academic requirements for admission to medical school. Successful applicants do not need to be science concentrators and we welcome applicants with varied academic backgrounds. Previous experience with peer advising is strongly preferred--e.g., Meiklejohn, Residential Peer Leaders, Minority Peer Counselors, WiSE Mentors, etc. As role models for the entire health careers undergraduate population at Brown, HCPAs are expected to have a strong academic record.

The HCPAs receive a one-time $500 stipend.
