A Perfect Wedding is a rollicking comedy about love, romance, marriage, and death. Fleeing to the forest to escape his impending wedding, the groom finds himself, and everyone else, lost in a thicket of shifting and unpredictable desires. Everything falls apart, only to come back together in unexpected ways after two gay wedding planners save the day. Throughout the play the diverse and eccentric cast of characters couple and decouple, confront the specter of death, fall in and out of love, and in the process challenge the conventions both of theatre and of marriage.

Playwright Charles L. Mee displays his signature blend of music, dance, and storytelling in this surprising and intriguing play based loosely on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This spirited and irreverent comedy is replete with familiar literary references, scenes lifted directly from a soap opera, a mud fight, and music and dance from many periods and cultures, including an exuberant Bollywood dance number.

The play is both an enjoyable romp and an openhearted interrogation and celebration of love, union, and – implicitly – marriage equality. Marriage Equality Rhode Island (MERI) will be in the lobby before and after many of the performances to answer questions and distribute information about their work.

A special reception, co-hosted by Sock & Buskin, The Brown LGBTQ center, and Pride Series 2012, will follow the Wednesday, April 18thperformance. All ticket holders for Wednesday’s performance are encouraged to stay and enjoy the festivities. Special guests MERI and GET Magazine will be onsite to distribute information and mingle with the crowd. The reception will offer light refreshments, live music, a surprise performance, and an opportunity to meet the cast.
