Every summer Brown offers a lively theatre program, centered around the Brown/Trinity Playwrights Repertory Theatre. Playwrights Rep, as it is fondly known, is an extraordinary ensemble of young theatre professionals from the Brown/Trinity MFA Program, augmented by seasoned alumni performers, and supported by the young artists-in-training who make up the Apprentice and TheatreBridge Companies.
Founded in 2005 by Lowry Marshall and newly under the direction of Artistic Director Kenneth Prestininzi, the Playwrights Rep was established to meet the need of emerging playwrights to develop new work in a relaxed and creative atmosphere. Brilliant emerging writers who are already developing a national reputation are invited to Brown for six weeks each summer. Working with this carefully assembled company of gifted professional actors and directors, playwrights are able to be deeply engaged in the production process — attending rehearsals daily, shaping and refining their texts as each new play is born. The result is some of the most imaginative and adventurous theatre to be seen anywhere in America.
