Welcome to Brown University! We are looking forward to working with you during your time at Brown.
As you are getting prepared to come to Brown, we wanted to remind you about some important events/information and review the process of registering with Student and Employee Accessibility Services.
Events to attend
- SEAS will have a table at the University Resource Fair in Sayles Hall on Saturday, August 30 from 2 to 5 pm. The accessible entrance is on the right side of the building. Take the small elevator to the first floor.
- SEAS will hold an Orientation for students and parents on Sunday, August 31st from 11:30 to 12:20 am in Salomon 003, on the College Green: Meet the SEAS staff and get information about how accommodations and services work at Brown. There will also be a panel of students who use accommodations and services!
- Thursday, September 4th. SEAS Welcome at 20 Benevolent St. 1st Floor, between Brown and Magee Streets, across from Keeney Quad. The main entrance is on the left side of the building and is accessible. Stop by and meet staff, learn about services and schedule an appointment to discuss accommodations.
- SEAS will conduct a Self Advocacy Workshop on Thursday, September 11 from 12:00 to 12:50 pm in J. Walter Wilson 402: Learn about the process of requesting accommodations. Discuss how to work with your professors, use services such as Tutoring or the Writing Center, and make sure you know where to go if you have a question or a concern. The session is strongly recommended for any students that will be using academic accommodations!
Registering with SEAS and requesting accommodations
If you have not already submitted it, a Registration and Release Form should be returned to the SEAS office as soon as possible.
Documentation confirming your area or disability and needs is also required. Documentation guidelines are available for your reference and to be shared with your provider. Please make sure your documentation is complete by following the guidelines and contacting us with any questions. If you have not sent it already, documentation can be mailed (Student and Employee Accessibility Services, Brown University, Box P, Providence, RI 02912) or faxed (401-863-1444). We encourage students to send this information in advance to allow time for us to contact you if more information is needed and enable us to have a clear picture of the range of services you may need. If you have recently sent materials, you may want to email us at email@example.com to make sure they have been received. As soon as we review your materials, we will get in touch with you to let you know if everything is complete. You may already have heard from us – we are sending this letter to all students wherever they are in this process.
Housing accommodations needed to be requested by July 5th in order to have the greatest priority in the assignment process. If there are any needs you have not yet communicated, please call 401-863-9588 and email us at firstname.lastname@example.org right away to request a Housing Accommodation Request Form. Requests that are received after the deadline may not be met before the semester begins. Documentation that supports your request will be needed.
Dining accommodations for significant food allergies and special diets should be arranged in advance of your arrival at Brown so everything can be in place. You will need to be regsitered with SEAS and should have confirmation from us that your accommodation is approved as well as instructions about your next steps. Parking accommodations for first year students are rare as many needs can be met with our campus transportation system. Requests for parking come through the SEAS office if they are disability-related. Please contact us by email, describe your disability-related reason for requesting parking, and request a SEAS Parking Accommodation Form if needed.
Setting up a meeting with a SEAS professional staff member
As soon as you are on campus, it will be important for you to come in to meet individually with one of us to review your documentation, discuss your needs, and learn about how the accommodation process works. Appointments can be scheduled by calling the SEAS office at (401) 863-9588. If you happen to be in the Providence area before Orientation begins, we are glad to meet with students early. These appointments are essential for all students who may need academic accommodations and strongly recommended for everyone who registers. Make sure you meet with someone as soon as possible.
A number of academic departments offer placement examinations for either advanced placement or simply for appropriate course choice.
If you think you will need accommodations for any of these examinations, please contact SEAS for assistance. Please also contact the appropriate departmental contact person to start the process of communicating your need. The list of department contacts is available in the Orientation 2013 guide.
Recreation Fee Waiver
The recreation fee covers Brown undergraduate, graduate, and medical students for access to all recreational and fitness facilities and entrance to athletic events. It does not cover intramural team participation or physical education classes. The Recreation Fee can be waived for students with disabilities or medical conditions that may prevent them from using these facilities. To request a waiver based on a disability, contact SEAS at 401-863-9588 or email@example.com. All other requests should be directed to the Office of Campus Life at 401-863-1800.
