Crime writing is the world’s most popular literary genre. From fiction to non-fiction, from thrillers to whodunit mysteries, from courtroom dramas to police procedurals, crime writing presents its own unique challenges and rewards. This course and workshop, held in the gorgeous fairy-tale capital of Slovenia, provides in-depth instruction from a professor and internationally best-selling author of fiction and non-fiction. The course includes sessions on writing that are tailored towards crime, as well as generous workshop time for writing on location and one-on-one tutorials with the professor. It also offers practical information for aspiring writers: how to get an agent, how to craft a great non-fiction book proposal, publication and marketing strategies, and more. This course is unique in that it also offers practical instruction in criminology, criminal investigation, forensic science, and much more, all customized to provide useful, realistic, immediately-applicable information for writers. Students will further benefit from an extended correspondence with the professor for three months after the program ends, with further personalized instruction and comments on writing produced after the workshop.
This program will be held in the hauntingly beautiful country of Slovenia. Nestled cozily in the heart of central Europe, Slovenia is two hours east of Venice and south of Vienna. Long considered the most open, independent, and culturally advanced of the former Yugoslav countries, Slovenia has a rich artistic and literary history, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The landscape features dramatic cliff-top castles, churches floating on glass-sheen lakes, wild cave systems, and sumptuous alpine scenery. Its capital, Ljubljana (pronounced Loo-blee-ah-nah) is roughly the size of Zurich (population 300,000) and has a similar feel: stylish Art Nouveau architecture mixes with traditional Habsburg Baroque houses along the winding café-and-willow-lined river. The charming, stylish candy-box city is an easy place to visit, as most everyone speaks English, and Reader’s Digest rated it “the most honest city in Europe.” In their free time, students will enjoy Ljubljana’s beautiful sites, great restaurants, and a fantastic assortment of pastries.
This is the ideal course for the aspiring crime writer, or a writer early on in his or her career, looking for expert instruction and time to write in an exotic, yet comfortable and easy-to-access European destination. Writers of fiction and non-fiction are welcome.
