Study Abroad: Hong Kong-Providence Program Details

Images of Hong Kong

This 8-week program, developed jointly by faculty of CUHK and Brown University, provides an opportunity to explore cultural heritage preservation in two very different areas. In Hong Kong, students will explore historical development of Hong Kong as exemplified by cultural heritage, the conflict and negotiation of economic and political interests in urban renewal and heritage conservation, collecting (public and private) as heritage preservation, and the politics of preservation, and “collective memory”. In Providence, students will explore the history and present-day philosophy and politics of preserving sites and stories from Colonial times to the present, exploring avenues including historical archaeology, historic preservation, museum exhibition, memorials, and oral history.

Housing

At CUHK, students live in a residence hall for international students. Students will share a room with one or two other students from the program.
At Brown, students live together in University apartments. Each student has his/her own room and shares a common kitchen/living area with a mixed group of CUHK and Brown students.
An average of 16-20 students will attend the program this summer.
