Communications and Outreach Coordinator

The Communications and Outreach Coordinator for the RI Space Grant Consortium (RISGC), funded by NASA, is responsible for developing and creating engaging content for the consortium website, newsletter and social media outlets.  The content developed would increase viewership and awareness of the program and its offerings across the state of RI.  Working closely with the RI Space Grant Program Manager, the Coordinator will create effective materials to convey the mission, achievements, initiatives, and funding opportunities of the program. This would include current information on both local and national activities of the NASA Space Grant College and Fellowship Project.

The Coordinator will also assume responsibility for implementing comprehensive outreach strategies to engage diverse audiences in science, technology, engineering and math research and curriculum/professional development.  This role plays a vital part in promoting the mission of the NASA RI Space Grant Consortium, fostering collaborations, and disseminating information to inspire and educate the public. The Coordinator will work closely with the RI Space Grant team, industry partners, NASA, academic researchers and the public to enhance outreach efforts and facilitate engagement initiatives. The Coordinator will collaborate with the RISGC Leadership to drive outreach and foster inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) initiatives.

Primary responsibilities include: developing and implementing activities and events in collaboration with RI Space Grant Consortium partners and organizations to engage diverse communities and ultimately promote the goals and objectives of the RI Space Grant Consortium.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years’ experience in a related field or the equivalent combination of experience and education.   Familiarity with scientific disciplines, preferred.
  • Previous work within an academic environment or in a role that supports communications and development; community outreach; events and programs, preferred.  
  • Excellent editing, proofreading and communications skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Knowledge of website development and maintenance on platforms such as WordPress.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, Google Suite platforms and Zoom.
  • Knowledge and command of evolving social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X and others as needed.
  • Ability to be pro-active and generate new ideas and strategies.
  • Ability to prioritize complex and at times competing goals.
  • Initiative and judgment to problem solve independently .
  • Ability to work with little supervision and also serve as a strong team member.
  • Ability to maintain privacy of confidential and/or sensitive material.

Grants and Financial Manager

This position provides high-level, comprehensive grant and finance management for the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences (DEEPS). Responsibilities include: high-level financial planning and analysis; pre- and post-award research administration; purchasing approvals; management of the department and auxiliary accounts; processing of salary allocations and costings; and effort certification coordination. This position also manages and supervises three employees (a grants coordinator, financial coordinator, and admin coordinator) and serves as HR coordinator in Workday, overseeing undergraduate student employment and approving hours for technical staff.

The Grants and Financial Manager partners with the Academic Department Manager (ADM) on all matters pertaining to grant administration and financial oversight of all University funds. This position serves as backup for the ADM.

This position plays a pivotal role in the financial management of DEEPS and provides a critical leadership role in support of budget management and analysis, research administration (both pre and post award) and adherence to and compliance with all University policies. Oversight of externally funded research grants is essential.

The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively advise the chair and the ADM regarding the financial status of the department, the financial implications of new initiatives and proposals, and the deployment of departmental resources. The successful applicant will work with confidential information on a daily basis.

This position is hybrid eligible.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5-7 years’ experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Experience in grants administration and financial management, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Direct experience in financial management, including budget management, reporting, financial modeling, and financial analysis.
  • In-depth knowledge of sponsored project accounting, fund accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Proficient with grant sponsor websites: NSF Fastlane; Research.gov; and Nspires.
  • Knowledge of University systems and policies.
  • Highly proficient with financial reporting and spreadsheet applications.
  • Strong financial, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills with the ability to work independently.

DEEPS Communications Assistant (Student Worker) 

This position will assist the Communications Specialist with drafting web content, gathering information and media, and creating social media projects to enhance the DEEPS website and engage with the DEEPS community online.

Lab Manager

The Paleoclimate and Climate Change Lab at Brown University seeks a Lab Manager to provide high-level oversight to the lab and to support and contribute to a diverse portfolio of research projects. The Lab Manager will manage operations of the lab's analytical facilities, including ICP-OES and cavity ringdown spectrometers, and provide assistance to student research assistants and visiting researchers alike.

Responsibilities include instrument operation, scheduling, and maintenance; lab purchasing and related paperwork; sample preparation; data and metadata analysis, quality control, and archival; training and oversight of student research assistants and other lab personnel; and ensuring compliance with environmental health and safety guidelines.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in geosciences, environmental science, or other STEM field required with a minimum of 2 years of related work experience required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 1 year of managerial experience is required.
  • Masters or PhD in Geoscience, Oceanography, or related field preferred.
  • Prior experience in climate, paleoclimate, and/or oceanographic research preferred

Research Laboratory Technician

The Research Laboratory Technician (RLT) at the Sulfur Isotope Laboratory at Brown University provides high-level oversight of lab operations and supports and contributes to a diverse portfolio of research projects. The Technician will manage operations of the lab's dual-inlet gas source mass spectrometer and wet chemistry laboratory that will be used for sample preparation; this includes sample digestions and gas purification. The individual will train and support students, postdocs, and visitors to the lab, and participate in lab outreach and education.

Responsibilities include: instrument operation, scheduling and maintenance; lab purchasing and related paperwork; sample preparation and analysis from internal and external requests; data and metadata analysis, quality control, and archival; training and oversight of student research assistants (RAs) and other lab personnel; and ensures compliance with environmental health and safety guidelines.

As time allows the RLT will also have the option to engage in independent research projects including fostering external collaborations, drafting of manuscripts, and preparation of grants (up to 20% of time).

This position is 100% grant funded and is fixed term until December 31st 2024.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geosciences or related field and 3-5 years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.  Ph.D. strongly preferred.
  • Experience operating analytical instrumentation.
  • Experience in mass spectrometry.

  • Experience with rock digestions while using strong acids and solvents.
