Brown Unplugged FAQs

What is Brown Unplugged? Have we done it before?

Brown Unplugged: Do it in the Dark is our 3rd annual dorm energy competition.  14 dorms are competing to see who can reduce their energy consumption the most!

How do I register?

Go to buildingdashboard.net/brown to check your dorms real-time energy use and competition standings.  Use the Commitments Widget on the dashboard to make an energy saving pledge and be automatically registered.  If you don’t want to use the Commitments Widget, you can also register here.  Both registration methods are completely equal and you only have to pick one.  Your chances of winning are not increased by registering in both locations.

Does this really work?

That’s up to you! This competition depends on students taking action to unplug their chargers and turn off their TVs! Last year 893 students made energy saving commitments and together saved 23,000 kWhs saving almost $3,000 and keeping 11 metrics tons of carbon out of the atmosphere.

How do you measure the reduction?

We did a two-week baseline before the competition.  Our percent reduction is based off of how much less energy we use during the competition as compared to those two weeks.  Each dorms reduction can be seen, in real time, on the energy dashboard!

What can I win?

Registered participants in the dorm that shows the greatest energy reduction on the dashboard will get to have a free pizza dinner with President Christina Paxton!  They will also be automatically entered to win one for four free bikes!

What if my dorm isn’t listed on the dashboard?

Due to insufficient metering some small dorms are not participating in the competition.  If you live in Miller, Metcalf, Minden, Machado, King House, West House, 315 Thayer, 111 Brown St. or Plantations you aren’t competing for the pizza party, but you can still get involved and win prizes! You can register using the “other dorm” option.  You can also “Like” the Brown is Green Facebook page and check it regularly for opportunities to win trivia and participation prizes! Or come to an EcoReps meeting from 8-9pm in Wilson 101 to get involved with competition planning!

What if I live off-campus?

Unfortunately, this competition is only for dorms.  But if you live-off campus you can still get involved and win prizes! You can register using the “off-campus” option.  You can also “Like” the Brown is Green Facebook page and check it regularly for opportunities to win trivia and participation prizes! Or come to an EcoReps meeting from 8-9pm in Wilson 101 to get involved with competition planning!
