Summer Funding Opportunities 2013
Undergraduate Research and Internships
The purpose of undergraduate summer funding is to facilitate research for a senior year thesis or to provide internship experience with an academic or civil society organization. Students are invited to propose work with any organization or indicate their interest in one of the Initiative’s partners. Students who already have made contact with an organization should attach a letter of interest from the organization. The Initiative will be happy to place those who do not have prior contacts with projects at our partner institutions in India, such as Janaagraha (Bangalore) and Centre for Policy Research (Delhi) or provide additional institutional affiliation where possible. Award: Up to a $5,000 maximum per project (5-7 awards)
Eligibility: Juniors; Sophomores with advanced standing* are eligible
(Brown Only).
To Apply: Please submit a coversheet (below), two page project proposal, transcript, resume, budget, two letters of recommendation and a letter from the organization (if proposing your own) to indiainitiative@brown.edu

Graduate and Postdoctoral Research, Internships or
Language Training
Graduate funding can be used for three purposes: research, internships, and language training. Proposals for either exploratory or advanced dissertation research will be considered. The first will cover the early years of graduate program; the second will facilitate completion of the dissertation. Internships will be with projects underway at partner institutions, some of these could include Janaagraha (Bangalore), Centre for Public Policy Research (Delhi), Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (Delhi), Center for Studies in Social Sciences, (Kolkata), National Council of Applied Economic Research (Delhi), Centre for Policy Indian Institute of Management (Bangalore). Language training will be for accelerated programs of language instruction. (American Institute of Indian Studies (Delhi) can assist in locating a center for specific language training.)
Other creative ideas are also welcome.
Award: Up to a $7,500 maximum per project (3-5 awards)
Eligibility: Graduate students in all fields dealing with modern India can apply (Brown Only).

Faculty Research or Language Training
Applications will be considered from Brown regular faculty from any field to support research on modern India or accelerated language training that is relevant to India. Proposals will be evaluated based on the quality of the proposed research or training and the potential for the activity to lead to a long-term successful program of research on modern India. Special consideration will be given to applications from junior faculty, especially those for whom India is a new
area of research.
Award: Up to a $10,000 maximum per project
Eligibility: Any regular Brown Faculty
To Apply: Please submit a coversheet (below), five page project proposal, CV, budget and for junior faculty, two letters of reference, to Indiainitiative@brown.edu. (Senior faculty need not send letters of recommendation.)

* Advanced Standing: Sophomores (2nd years) with advanced standing are those students who have been officially approved for accelerated/early graduation under the criteria below:
1) 3-6 course credits of pre-Brown college level work = 1 semester of advanced standing
2) 7-10 course credits of pre-Brown college level work = 2 semesters of advanced standing.
