Co-sponsored by IMNI and the Year of China, Professor Jianguo Hou, President of the University of Science and Technology of China will be visiting Brown on 4/12/12. Participating in IMNI's Distinguished Lectureship Series in Nanoscience, Professor Jianguo Hou will give a talk entitled "Detecting and Manipulating Single Molecules with STM".
The quest for novel quantum properties of devices has spurred a growing effort in pushing the materials’ size down to nanometer and even molecular scales, or using single molecules as functional components. The recent rapid advances in nanotechnology, especially those based on molecules, are due in large part to our abilities to measure and manipulate individual structures at the molecular scale. With the help of the scanning tunneling microscope (STM), we are able to investigate the intrinsic properties of single molecules and their interactions. We have also carried out experimental attempts to manipulate electronic, magnetic,
