Summer@Brown: Spending Money
Pre-College Programs at Brown University – Summer 2009
When planning how much money to bring, consider the following: class-related supplies such as books; laundry, movies, dining out, bus and cab fares, postal service, toiletries, snacks, magazines, and transportation home.
You will need to purchase a coursepack, which contains your class reading materials. These usually cost $30-$40. Other than coursepacks, the amount of money to bring largely depends on your normal spending habits: obviously, students who enjoy eating off campus and shopping will need more money than those exclusively eating in the dining hall.
Summer Session Credit-Bearing courses and some Pre-College courses require textbooks. Textbooks costs vary from betwee $75 to $150.
Leadership students should expect to pay between $10 and $20 for a course reader. BELL students are also responsible for dinner (about $10) when you visit Brown during the day on campus. Students may also want to bring money for snacks and souvenirs for the day on campus, and for any travel expenses such as taxis or meals. All other course-related meals, accommodations and supplies are covered.
In addition to "ready cash", students should bring an ATM card or traveler's checks. Automatic teller machines are conveniently located on campus. Traveler's checks are much safer than cash and can be easily cashed with the presentation of appropriate identification. Please note that local banks will not accept personal checks or money orders from students and will only accept American Express traveler's checks, which can be purchased at any bank.
