Brown University’s Summer Studio Art Program in Pont-Aven, France is an intensive studio experience for foundation and advanced students at the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art.

The immersion setting and individual attention from faculty make this an ideal opportunity for students concentrating in the Arts. Experience the artists' community of France and enjoy an international experience during Summer 2009. The program is an intensive live work environment that is often a bridge to graduate studies. For all its beauty and history as an art community, Pont-Aven is also an ideal place for critical contemporary dialogues to take place. It offers an abundant source of visual information for students to work from. The ocean, Aven River, fields and nearby pre-historic sites are easily accessed, providing rich references for the studio courses. Pont-Aven’s outdoor weekly food market in town has wonderful fresh fruits, vegetables, breads and cheeses.

Eligibility

Undergraduates from any U.S. college

Credits

2 credits ( 8 semester hours)
Each course in this intensive program is 1-credit (4 semester hours) and meets for 60 hours of contact time during the summer session.  Students are expected to enroll in 2 courses.  Students with no prior studio art experience should select Drawing and one other course.

Language Requirement

No previous language experience required.  French language instruction in a non-credit format will be available to all students as part of the program.

Visa Requirement 

US citizens do not require a  visa to participate in this program or to travel to France for the period of time within which this program occurs. Students who do not hold US Passports must consult with the Embassy of France to determine if they are required to obtain a student visa to enter France.  It is each individual student’s responsibility to determine what documentation is required for study with Brown in France.  Brown’s Summer & Continuing Studies and the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art will provide the appropriate invitations for student who request visa support.  Students must notify summerabroad@Brown.edu that they require visa support for the program in France no later than February 28, 2009.

Housing and Meals

Students in the Brown studio-intensive program in Pont-Aven. Live with host families. These families have worked with US students over a number of years and are identified by our partner and host institution, the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art.  All host family accommodation is within walking distance of the studios. You will have breakfast with your host family, and 4 dinners per week will be included in the program. Other meals are not included in the cost of the program – you will have kitchen access to prepare your own meals or you can enjoy the delicious offerings of Brittany

Summer in Pont Aven: Dates & Fees

July 4 - August 2, 2009
Program fee: $8,200 + $350 materials fee.
Transportation to/from Paris and some meals not included.
Program housing is not available before or after program dates.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is only available for Brown undergraduates.
Brown students who receive aid during the academic year are eligible to apply for partial course fee remissions. Students simply need to indicate that they wish to receive summer financial aid on the Summer Session Course Selection form.
