Libraries, Museum, and Gallery

A An invaluable resource to students and faculty, the University libraries support Brown’s education and research mission by providing world class access, equipment and services for the Brown community. Library resources at Brown come in all shapes and forms — from print and electronic books and journals, to sheet music and DVDs, to databases and digital images. The libraries offer a variety of student spaces ranging from absolute quiet areas to group study rooms to lounges and cafes.

- The John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library is Brown’s primary teaching and research library for the humanities, social sciences and fine arts.
- The Susan P. and Richard A. Friedman Study Center is a central gathering place for students located in the Sciences Library
- The Sciences Library houses the University’s collection of science and medical materials, maps, and the University’'s media services operation.
- The John Hay Library houses special collections, including most of the University’s rare books, manuscripts, and archives.
- The John Carter Brown Library houses the world’s preeminent collection of Americana, both North and South, from before 1825.
- The Virginia M. Orwig Music Library consolidates all of Brown’s music materials and is home to the Walter Neiman ’46 Archive of Sound Recordings and more than 24,000 scores.
- The Art Slide Library houses instructional and research images for visual art, architecture, and archaeology.
- The Annmary Brown Memorial exhibits a collection of European and American paintings, the Mazansky British Sword Collection, and Brown family heirlooms.
The University’s Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology houses more than 100,000 artifacts from the Americas, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. Recognized as one of the leading anthropological teaching museums in the Northeast, the Haffenreffer offers public lectures, performances, festivals, summer camps, educational programs for children, and a broad range of related programs and events. The Haffenreffer’s Manning Hall location features exhibits co-curated by students, museum staff, and faculty.
