Violence and Leisure in Roman North Africa

Rebecca Molholt

Assistant Professor
Department of Art History and Architecture, Brown University

To understand spectacles staged in the Roman amphitheater, we often turn to images that adorned the walls and floors of Roman houses. Seaside villas in Roman Libya provide striking and visceral examples: leopard hunts in the steam rooms, dead gladiators at the dinner table. Building on the work of Shelby Brown and Kathleen Coleman, this paper asks how and why violence is put to work in spaces of luxury.
