Cerebral arteriopathy (CADASIL)

 

 

CADASIL is an acronym for Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy. This 55 year old man with a history of migraine headaches experienced subsequent dementia. PAS stain highlights degeneration of a small vessel in the brain; Luxol Fast Blue  stain further highlights vessel degeneration. There has been a loss of smooth muscle cells.
