Staff Development Day

Wednesday, June 12, 2024

Staff Development Day is fast approaching, and we couldn’t be more excited for this year’s sessions and festivities! Get ready to learn, engage, and connect with colleagues on June 12, 2024. This year’s theme is Connecting Today | Creating Tomorrow.

Brown’s beloved Staff Development Day tradition is offering professional and personal growth and other engagement opportunities on campus along with some virtual offerings to accommodate our remote and hybrid staff. Brown staff can look forward to the return of Leslie’s Farmers Market and the traditional end-of-day celebration on the main green as well!

The Shopping Period will take place from April 29 to May 8, 2024, offering a choice of 80 sessions ranging from professional development and faculty research to self-care. Additionally, there will be over a dozen volunteer opportunities with organizations across Rhode Island available for registration by Brown staff. Registration opens on Thursday, May 9, and closes on June 5, 2024.

United Way Children's Book Drive

Have your department participate in the annual Children's Book Drive

The Children's Book Drive is a collaborative effort between United Way of Rhode Island, Books Are Wings, and community partners to promote reading among youth. Over the past decade, this event has distributed 308,000 books to children across the state. By lending a hand, more children can have access to books and prevent summer learning loss.

You can learn more about the Annual Children's Book Drive by visiting this website: https://www.unitedwayri.org/press-release/childrens-book-drive-2024-copy/. If you are interested in organizing your own book drive, please contact your Program Officer, who can provide you with a toolkit to help. Please note that we will collect the books from your company in May to make it more convenient for you.

We are excited to have you join us in supporting literacy among Rhode Island youth!

Bear Market Food Exchange

This pantry shelf is stocked by donations from students, faculty and staff, and supplemented monthly by the Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life.

This small food pantry is available for anyone struggling to get enough to eat. All community members are welcome to contribute non-perishable food. If you would like to donate, you can drop off your donation in a bag or box, or simply add food to our shelves.

Sponsor a Restock!

If you or your office/department would like to sponsor a restocking of the pantry shelf, we invite you to fill out the sign-up form. Sponsorship may include food collection, monetary donations, a combination --or another idea you may have!

Gender Affirming Closet

The Gender Affirming Closet is located at the LGBTQ Center in Stonewall House at 22 Benevolent St. They accept clean, lightly loved or new clothing, accessories, shoes, drag-wear, and unused make-up. Join a Committee, Board, or Council!

Let your voice be heard on Brown advisory boards and committees. Brown offers many opportunities for staff to be involved on campus — several of Brown's advisory boards and committees feature voting staff members. When staff vacancies are available, SAC announces opportunities in Today @ Brown, reviews applications, and submits recommendations for candidacy to the committee's chair.

Join SAC! Staff who meet eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply for SAC.
